How your RD grows

Balance at the end of each year, split into what you deposited and the interest earned.

Your first year's deposits earn ₹11,230 in interest
That is 5.0× what the final year's deposits earn, because early instalments compound for longer. Each extra year you keep the RD running gives every deposit more time to grow.

How RD maturity is calculated

A recurring deposit is a series of monthly deposits. Each instalment earns quarterly-compounded interest for the months left until maturity, so the first deposit grows the most and the last one the least.

M = Σ R × (1 + r / 400)^((N − m + 1) / 3)
M
Maturity value — the sum over every instalment
R
Monthly deposit
r
Annual interest rate (% p.a.)
N
Total number of monthly deposits
m
Instalment number (1 for the first deposit)
Why is the exponent divided by 3?
Interest compounds every quarter, and a quarter is three months. An instalment that stays deposited for 12 months therefore compounds for 12 ÷ 3 = 4 quarters.
Is RD interest taxable?
Yes. RD interest is taxed at your income-tax slab rate, like FD interest, and banks may deduct TDS. The figures here are before tax.
What happens if I miss an instalment?
Banks usually charge a small penalty for a missed or late instalment, and the missed amount earns no interest for that period. This calculator assumes every deposit is made on time.
