Frequently Asked Questions: Stock Market & Bank Holidays
Essential rules, settlement guidelines, and weekend banking schedules for investors.
What is the difference between a Trading Holiday and a Clearing/Settlement Holiday?
A Trading Holiday means stock exchanges (like NSE, BSE, or NYSE) are completely shut—no buy or sell orders can be placed. A Clearing/Settlement Holiday means trading may be open, but depository transfer and bank clearing operations (funds payout/pay-in) are paused. Trades placed on settlement holidays are settled on the next working business day.
Are Indian banks open on Saturdays?
Per Reserve Bank of India (RBI) regulations, all scheduled commercial and public sector banks in India are closed on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of every month. Banks remain open for full working hours on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Saturdays (unless a designated national festival holiday falls on that day).
What is Diwali Muhurat Trading in India?
Muhurat Trading is a special, auspicious 1-hour trading session conducted every year by the NSE and BSE on Diwali evening (Laxmi Pujan). Even though the day is an official financial holiday, exchanges open for 60 minutes to welcome the new Hindu financial year (Samvat). Trading during this hour is believed to bring wealth and prosperity for the coming year.
What happens when a stock market holiday falls on a weekend?
In the US, UK, and Canada, if a federal statutory holiday falls on a Saturday, it is typically "observed" on the preceding Friday. If it falls on a Sunday, it is observed on the following Monday. In India, holidays falling on Saturdays or Sundays are generally absorbed without replacement weekdays.
Can I still use Net Banking and UPI during Bank Holidays?
Yes! Digital banking services including UPI (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm), IMPS, and ATM cash withdrawals operate 24x7x365, even on national holidays and weekends. Only physical branch counter services, RTGS batch transfers, and cheque clearances are paused until the next banking business day.
