World Clock & Global Timezone Guide
How international time zones, Daylight Saving Time (DST), and UTC offsets work across continents.
What is the difference between UTC and GMT?
UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the world’s primary time standard based on high-precision atomic clocks. GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) is a timezone based on the Earth’s rotation at 0° longitude in London. While they share the exact same time without offset, UTC is a scientific standard, whereas GMT is a legal time zone used in parts of Europe and Africa.
How does Daylight Saving Time (DST) affect world clocks?
Countries in North America (USA, Canada) and Europe advance their clocks by 1 hour in spring (*spring forward*) and set them back 1 hour in autumn (*fall back*). Countries near the equator (such as India, Singapore, and the UAE) do not observe Daylight Saving Time, which means the time difference between India and New York shifts from 9.5 hours to 10.5 hours depending on the season.
What is the International Date Line (IDL)?
Located roughly around 180° longitude in the Pacific Ocean, crossing the International Date Line going west adds one calendar day, while crossing east subtracts one calendar day. This is why Auckland (New Zealand) and Tokyo (Japan) are among the first major financial hubs to welcome each new calendar day.
What are the golden hours for international business calls?
The highest international overlap occurs between London (afternoon) and New York (morning) between 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM GMT (8:00 AM – 12:00 PM EST). For teams collaborating between India and the US East Coast, 6:30 PM – 9:30 PM IST aligns with 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM EST.
